What is Epitaxis?

The medical name for a nosebleed is epistaxis. During a nosebleed, blood flows from one or both nostrils. It can be heavy or light and last from a few seconds to 15 minutes or more.

Do you hold your head back with a nosebleed?

If you get a nosebleed, don’t blow your nose. This can cause more bleeding. Also, don’t tilt your head back. This common practice will cause blood to run into your throat.

Why do people tilt their head back with a nosebleed?

While it may reduce the amount of blood that comes out of your nose, tilting your head back allows the blood to run down the back of your throat.

What are three types of nosebleeds?

Causes of nose bleeds can be divided into three categories, local, systemic, and idiopathic (unknown).

What causes epistasis?

Local trauma is the most common cause, followed by facial trauma, foreign bodies, nasal or sinus infections, and prolonged inhalation of dry air. Children usually present with epistaxis due to local irritation or recent upper respiratory infection (URI).

What is bilateral epistaxis?

Unilateral epistaxis suggests a lesion rostral to the nasopharynx, while bilateral epistaxis indicates a lesion caudal to the nasal cavities. In some cases of epistaxis, the origin of the blood may be obvious, but often other diagnostic procedures are required to detect the cause.

What is a posterior nosebleed?

When the tissue at the back of your nose in your nasal cavity is damaged and bleeds, it’s called a posterior nosebleed. Blood may come out of your nostrils, but blood can also leak into your throat. This type of nosebleed can be serious.

Where do you pinch your nose for a nosebleed?

Pinch the soft part of your nose together (just below the bony part of your nose) and breathe through your mouth. Do this for 10 minutes. Make sure you hold the pressure for 10 minutes without stopping.

What is the medical term for nosebleed?

Nosebleeds, also known as epistaxis, are common issues that usually resolve on their own or are easily treated in a medical environment.

What is the medical term for nose?

rhinal (rhin/al) is a term pertaining to or of the nose.

What is intermittent epistaxis?

Repeated trauma to the epithelium of the septal mucosa from sprays directed medially can cause intermittent epistaxis. Proper counseling and instruction to direct the spray away from the midline septum can alleviate this problem. Trauma from a foreign body can elicit epistaxis.
