Define a compose key

  1. Open the Activities overview and start typing Tweaks.
  2. Click Tweaks to open the application.
  3. Click the Keyboard & Mouse tab.
  4. Click Disabled next to the Compose Key setting.
  5. Turn the switch on in the dialog and pick the keyboard shortcut you want to use.

What is WinCompose?

WinCompose is a compose key for Windows. It allows to easily write special characters such as é ž à ō û ø ☺ ¤ ∅ « ♯ ⸘ Ⓚ ㊷ ♪ ♬ using short and often very intuitive key combinations. For instance, ö is obtained using o + “, and ♥ is obtained using < + 3. WinCompose also supports Emoji input for 😁 👻 👍 💩 🎁 🌹 🐊.

What key is AltGr?

The AltGr key is the first key to the right of the space bar. (Some keyboards have a second Alt key here). A keyboard with additional engravings showing the characters typed when AltGr is held down. (The AltGr key, located immediately to the right of the Space bar, does not appear in this photo.)

To make WinCompose work, you need to press ‘Right Alt’ key. The color of the square at the centre of the icon changes to the green from black. This change in color indicates that you can now start making special characters and symbols.

What does ALT GR F11 do?

Ctrl + Alt + F11 sort of puts the GUI to sleep, and puts you into a virtual terminal mode, something like the old fashion ttys. Once in this mode you can choose between 6 different tty input screens. Each acting like it is an old-fashion tty.
