How do you release a boat trailer brake?

To retract the breakaway cable, slide the coupler fully forward and push up on the pushrod release bracket located on the underside and behind the hitch ball socket to allow the bead to retract into the actuator. This will release the trailer brakes.

What can cause trailer brakes not to work?

If there is a bad ground connection the trailer brakes will not work. Next, check the brake controller wiring. Sever the blue brake output wire, leaving enough room to splice it back together when testing is done and then apply the manual slide.

How do I know if my trailer has electric brakes or surge brakes?

A traditional actuator, like the Dexter Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator # 099-175-00, or an Electric Over Hydraulic (EOH) actuator, like the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # HBA16, would mean that you have hydraulic brakes. If your trailer has brakes, but no actuator, chances are that it has electric brakes.

What causes trailer brakes to stick?

The causes of electric trailer brakes locking up are few: 1) Brake controller adjusted incorrectly for the load; 2) Brake controller failure; 3) Grease on the brake shoes; 4) Poorly adjusted brake shoes; 5) Broken brake shoe. When brakes lock up due to controller issues. it is generally both wheels that lock up.

Why do my boat trailer brakes lock up in reverse?

If you have a surge or hydraulic coupler on the trailer, such as those typically found on boat trailers, the hydraulic brakes will lock up when the vehicle reverses unless the lock-out circuit on the coupler is wired to the trailer connector on the vehicle.

How do you know if your trailer brakes are bad?

Even if the brakes have had little use, load and weight may cause uneven wear on your braking system. Some obvious signs that your brakes are in need of replacement include noise, pulling, pulsing and pedal depression during braking.

How do you tell if my trailer brakes are working?

The easiest way to tell if the brakes are working on the trailer would be engage the manual override and have a friend sit outside the vehicle and watch the wheels on the trailer. If they begin to drag when you let off the brake pedal (slowly) on the tow vehicle then you know they are working.

Can I tow a trailer with electric brakes without a brake controller?

The answer is, no. Electric trailer brakes do not work without a brake controller. If your trailer is equipped with electric brakes, you will need a brake controller to tow.
